What had been widely expected became reality after reviewing an uneven season. Chelsea, owned by American billionaire Todd Boehly, lost the Carabao Cup final and was knocked out in the FA Cup semifinals, although they had a strong second half of the Premier League campaign.
Pochettino, who recently admitted he was planning for the next season, arrived at Stamford Bridge on May 30, 2023, replacing Frank Lampard after a turbulent campaign in which the London side went through four managers and missed out on all European competitions.
“Thanks to the ownership group at Chelsea and the sporting directors for the opportunity to be part of this club’s history. The team is now well-positioned to move forward in the Premier League and Europe in the coming years,” said the Argentine coach, who had signed a two-year contract with an optional third, but left early.
Among potential candidates mentioned by British media like The Telegraph are Sebastian Hoeness (Stuttgart), Míchel (Girona), Kieran McKenna (Ipswich Town and Brighton), and Enzo Maresca (Leicester City).
In Europe, speculation continues that Pochettino could be considered to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. Sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley expressed their gratitude to the Argentine: “He will always be welcome back at Stamford Bridge, and we wish him the best in his future coaching career.”
Since Roman Abramovich’s departure, Chelsea has had four managers under Boehly’s ownership. In two years, Boehly spent over €1 billion, including €500 million during Pochettino’s tenure, on signings like Moisés Caicedo (€120M), Christopher Nkunku (€60M), and Romeo Lavia (€62M), aiming to strengthen the club in the Premier League.
With his departure, a significant chapter closes for Chelsea and European football, while the Argentine coach remains one of the most respected figures in the sport, known for his work in the Premier League and his lasting legacy as a manager.
