Lionel Messi has been honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the United States, although he did not attend the ceremony led by President Joe Biden.

The Argentine star, now playing for Inter Miami, received the highest civilian honor granted by the U.S. government. The event at the White House brought together 18 distinguished figures from politics, culture, sports, and philanthropy. Messi, however, was the only recipient who could not be present.

This recognition makes him the first Argentine ever to receive the award, which was originally created nearly 80 years ago by President Harry S. Truman and renamed in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy.

The Medal of Freedom is reserved for individuals who have made “especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, culture, or other significant public or private endeavors.”

In a statement, the White House praised the recipients as “great leaders who have made extraordinary contributions to their country and the world. They keep the faith, give everyone a fair chance, and put decency above all else.”

Alongside Messi, other honorees included Hillary Clinton, designer Ralph Lauren, U2 frontman Bono, and philanthropist George Soros.

Messi, who is currently on vacation in his hometown of Funes, Argentina, was unable to travel to Washington due to prior commitments, according to those close to him.

His selection, nonetheless, highlights not only his legendary sports career but also his charitable work through the Leo Messi Foundation and his role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

In sports, the Medal has previously been awarded to icons such as Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Simone Biles, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. With this honor, Messi becomes the first male soccer player to receive the award, cementing his status as one of the most influential athletes in history.

The ceremony was particularly symbolic, as it marked the last time President Biden awarded the Medal before leaving office. Since joining Inter Miami in August 2023, Messi has not only transformed the club but also made a major cultural impact across the United States, further solidifying his place as a global icon.
