The Academy revealed the list of nominees for the Oscars. The March 2 ceremony in Los Angeles will be shaped by the memory of the wildfires.

The Oscars now have their leading contenders for the 2025 edition. On Thursday, January 23, the Academy announced the nominees across the most prominent categories in film.

The ceremony will take place on March 2 at the iconic Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, a city still recovering from devastating wildfires in recent weeks. 

In the Best Picture category, the selection showcases a wide range of storytelling and creative visions: Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, The Substance, and Wicked

Acting categories also stand out with strong performances. Among the Best Actor nominees are Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice).

On the women’s side, Mexican actress Karla Sofía Gascón earned recognition for Emilia Pérez, alongside Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) and Demi Moore (The Substance).

In directing, Sean Baker (Anora), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), and Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez) are among the key names competing. Meanwhile, international films from Brazil, Denmark, France, Germany, and Latvia will battle for the coveted prize. 

Beyond predictions and favorites, this year’s edition promises a unique tone: Hollywood’s glamour will share the spotlight with tributes to wildfire victims, reminding audiences how cinema often mirrors the world’s realities.
