A serious act of political violence shook Honduras on Thursday when a lawmaker was critically injured after being attacked with an explosive device just before a congressional session began. The incident occurred amid heightened political tensions and sparked widespread condemnation.

The victim was Gladys Aurora López, a representative of the National Party to the Central American Parliament. 

She was answering questions from journalists outside the National Congress when an individual standing behind her threw an explosive device that struck her body. The attack caused severe injuries to her neck and back, as seen in videos recorded at the scene.

People nearby immediately assisted López and moved her inside the legislative building, where she received medical attention. Images shared later showed deep cuts on her back and severely damaged clothing, highlighting the seriousness of the assault.

The president of Congress responded swiftly and ordered an immediate review of internal security cameras and emergency system records to identify the person responsible.

 Legislative authorities stated that they will not tolerate any form of violence against members of Congress, either inside or outside the chamber.

The attack occurred just hours after lawmakers were summoned to attend a session related to an electoral review process. Authorities had also invited citizens to gather outside Congress to observe the proceedings, prompting a significant security deployment in the area.

Leaders of the National Party strongly condemned the assault and demanded guarantees for the safe exercise of parliamentary duties. 

Senior figures within the party, including Asfura, expressed solidarity with the injured lawmaker and warned about the dangers that escalating political violence poses to Honduran democracy.

The incident reignited concerns over the safety of public officials and the growing climate of confrontation in Honduras.
