Actor James Van Der Beek, best known for starring in some of the most influential teen series of the late 1990s and early 2000s, died at 48 after battling advanced colon cancer. His death prompted tributes from across the entertainment industry and from fans worldwide.
His family confirmed the news in a statement shared on social media. “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed away peacefully this morning,” they wrote, adding that he faced his final days “with courage, faith, and grace.”
Doctors diagnosed him in the second half of 2023, and he publicly revealed his condition in November 2024.
He explained in interviews that he first noticed persistent changes in his bowel habits, a common symptom of colorectal cancer. Medical tests later confirmed stage three cancer, meaning it had spread to nearby lymph nodes.
Colorectal cancer develops in the inner lining of the colon and can spread if not detected early. Health experts stress that expanded screening has reduced mortality rates in recent years, though the disease continues to affect more men than women.

Rather than withdraw from public life, Van Der Beek used his experience to raise awareness about early detection. “I’ve learned a lot. If I can save someone from going through this, that’s magic,” he said. He admitted that the most difficult part of treatment was feeling that he had lost essential parts of his identity as a father, husband, and provider. “I had to ask myself who I am. And I realized I am still worthy of love,” he reflected.
He rose to international fame portraying Dawson Leery in “Dawson’s Creek,” which aired from 1998 to 2003. The show shaped a generation of teen series and cemented his career alongside Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Joshua Jackson.
He also starred in the film “Varsity Blues” and took on diverse roles, including playing a fictionalized version of himself in “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23.” He competed on “Dancing with the Stars” and recently guest-starred in Prime Video’s college comedy “Overcompensating.”
In September, he made a virtual appearance at a charity reunion of the “Dawson’s Creek” cast, raising funds for F Cancer and celebrating the show’s legacy.

Following the announcement of his death, colleagues shared heartfelt tributes. Sarah Michelle Gellar expressed sorrow for his family, while Jennifer Garner described his passing as heartbreaking. Busy Philipps wrote an emotional message honoring their friendship.
Official “Dawson’s Creek” accounts and Sony Pictures stated that his portrayal helped define a generation of television. SAG-AFTRA honored him for bringing sincerity and emotional depth to his performances. With his passing, the entertainment world loses one of the defining faces of late-1990s teen series, but his legacy continues to resonate with audiences everywhere.
