The 31-year-old former One Direction member fell from the third floor of the Hotel Casasur in the Palermo neighborhood while visiting Argentina. Authorities are awaiting autopsy results to determine his condition prior to the accident and the exact cause of death. 

Alberto Crescenti, head of SAME, reported that Payne fell into the hotel’s inner courtyard from approximately 14 meters, likely causing a fracture to the base of his skull.

“He died instantly. There was no chance of resuscitation; the injuries were severe,” Crescenti told. The 911 call came in at 5:04 PM, and emergency teams confirmed the singer’s death minutes later. 

Payne was in Argentina to attend several cultural and sporting events. He attended a concert by his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan on October 2 at the Movistar Arena and also saw Paul McCartney perform at River Plate Stadium.

He is also believed to have attended the Argentina vs. Bolivia national soccer match on October 15. The emergency call reported “a person out of control,” so toxicology results are awaited to determine whether any substances were involved in the accident.

The singer was the father of 7-year-old Bear Grey Payne, from his relationship with British singer Cheryl Tweedy between 2016 and 2018, and was currently in a relationship with American influencer Kate Cassidy.

Following his death, international media shared images of his covered body in the hotel courtyard and photos of his hotel room showing traces of substances. Additionally, some of Payne’s last moments in Argentina, including posts he shared during his visit, have circulated on social media.
