Lithuania closes its border with Belarus indefinitely over smuggling balloons

The Government of Lithuania has announced the indefinite closure of its border with Belarus, citing growing concerns over smuggling balloons that have reportedly disrupted air traffic and raised security alarms.

Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene stated after a National Security Commission meeting that the decision will be formally approved on Wednesday. “There will be some exceptions,” she said, allowing passage only for Lithuanian and EU citizens, as well as diplomatic personnel.

Ruginiene emphasized that the move aims to “send a clear message to Belarus,” asserting that Lithuania “will not tolerate any form of hybrid attack,” referring to the balloons allegedly used for cigarette smuggling, as reported by public broadcaster LRT.

Authorities conducted reconnaissance operations over the weekend, testing interception strategies. Starting next week, the Armed Forces will be authorized to take “all necessary measures,” including shooting down the devices.

The government also plans to amend the Penal Code to impose harsher penalties for illegal trafficking, introducing prison sentences in addition to fines.

At the European level, Lithuania intends to discuss the balloon threat with other nations. The Foreign Ministry will propose a new package of sanctions against Alexander Lukashenko’s regime, long accused of political and military collaboration with Russia.

This move underscores Lithuania’s growing assertiveness in defending its borders and highlights its broader commitment to maintaining regional security amid escalating tensions in Eastern Europe.
