The South Korean president boosts alliances with Singapore and the Philippines, promoting maritime security, trade, and technology cooperation.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has strengthened international relations during official visits to the Philippines and Singapore, amid rising tensions in the South China Sea.
In Manila, Yoon signed several memorandums of understanding with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. aimed at maintaining regional peace and stability, as well as enhancing maritime security cooperation. The agreements include commitments to improve mutual trust, protect both countries’ maritime interests, exchange information, and coordinate search-and-rescue missions.
“Our countries will strengthen partnerships in areas such as transnational crime prevention and regional security,” Yoon said during a joint press conference. Marcos highlighted that the agreements mark progress in bilateral cooperation and mutual benefits for both nations.
Beyond security, the visit also focused on economic collaboration and energy projects, including nuclear energy development in the Philippines.
After Manila, Yoon traveled to Singapore, where he announced the launch of a “strategic partnership” next year, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
