Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, recently convicted for attempting a coup, has been diagnosed with skin cancer, his personal doctor announced Wednesday.
According to Dr. Claudio Birolini, Bolsonaro has “squamous cell carcinoma, which is neither the most benign nor the most aggressive, but still requires close medical monitoring.”

The lesions were identified during tests conducted on Sunday and are located on the former president’s arm and chest. Following the discovery, Bolsonaro was urgently hospitalized in Brazil, staying under observation since Tuesday.
He was discharged shortly after, following the removal of the lesions, with no need for additional treatments like chemotherapy.
The DF Star hospital medical report confirmed carcinoma in two of the eight examined lesions. Birolini emphasized that while it is not an extremely aggressive type of cancer, clinical follow-up will be essential to prevent future complications.
In addition to the cancer, Bolsonaro has been diagnosed with anemia and kidney issues, potentially linked to injuries from the knife attack he suffered during the 2018 election campaign.
Bolsonaro’s health has drawn attention in recent months due to recurring bouts of hiccups and vomiting. These episodes also explained his absence in recent trial sessions, where he was sentenced to 27 years for leading a coup attempt.
The former president’s doctor noted that all suspicious lesions were identified back in April and that Bolsonaro will now need regular check-ups and specialized medical supervision. “Monitoring will be key to ensure no serious complications arise from the squamous cell carcinoma,” Birolini said.
Despite the skin cancer diagnosis, Bolsonaro’s condition is considered early-stage, allowing for timely and controlled medical management.
His medical team in Brazil will continue to monitor his progress, ensuring he receives proper care while dealing with the legal and political consequences of his recent actions.
