Uruguay, Spain, Mexico, Chile and Colombia Reject U.S. Military Actions and Urge Multilateral De-Escalation

Uruguay joined Spain, Mexico, Chile and Colombia on Sunday in a joint statement strongly rejecting unilateral military actions carried out by the United States in Venezuelan territory.

Brazil also endorsed the declaration, which warns about the growing risks to regional stability and international order.

The six countries expressed their “deep concern and rejection” of the military operation that led to the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

According to the statement, such actions violate fundamental principles of international law, including the prohibition of the use or threat of force and respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The signatory governments also voiced concern over any attempt to impose external control over Venezuela’s natural or strategic resources.

The warning followed statements by U.S. President Trump, who claimed that the United States would govern Venezuela until a “safe” and “appropriate” transition takes place.

Trump further stated that U.S. oil companies would invest billions of dollars to rebuild Venezuela’s energy infrastructure, which he described as being in poor condition.

The joint declaration, however, stressed that no form of external administration or appropriation can be considered legitimate.

Joint statements with countries

In response, Uruguay, Spain, Mexico, Chile and Colombia emphasized that Venezuela’s crisis must be resolved exclusively through peaceful means. Dialogue, negotiation and respect for the will of the Venezuelan people, they argued, remain the only viable paths forward.

The statement underlined that only an inclusive political process led by Venezuelans themselves can produce a democratic, sustainable solution that respects human dignity.

Any external interference, the countries warned, would undermine that goal.

The governments also reaffirmed that Latin America and the Caribbean constitute a zone of peace, built on non-intervention, mutual respect and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

They called for regional unity beyond political differences in the face of actions that threaten collective stability.

Finally, the six countries urged United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and UN member states to use multilateral mechanisms and good offices to help de-escalate tensions and preserve regional peace.
