Congress of Peru to review vote of confidence for José Jerí’s cabinet

The Congress of the Republic of Peru confirmed that this Wednesday, October 22, a plenary session will take place to evaluate the vote of confidence requested by the cabinet led by José Jerí.

Call was officially confirmed by the President of Congress, Fernando Rospigliosi, who stated that all 130 congress members will attend the presentation by the head of state and his ministerial team at 4:00 p.m.

Document submitted by Prime Minister Ernesto Álvarez outlines the government policy guidelines to be discussed. Rospigliosi assured that the session will allow members to hear the cabinet’s proposals and proceed to a vote on the confidence motion, in accordance with the Peru Constitution.

Meanwhile, Fuerza Popular confirmed its decision to maintain its members in the Congress Board, clarifying that its stance does not imply assuming the leadership of the legislature or resigning from other executive positions.

What does Peru’s policy say about the cabinet?

Luis Galarreta, party secretary general, explained that the communication referred only to the presidency of Congress, adding that Fernando Rospigliosi will continue as first vice president in charge without assuming the Parliament’s leadership.

Parliamentary spokesperson César Revilla previously generated debate with statements about the non-participation of his caucus in executive leadership roles, ensuring that their position seeks to prevent misinterpretations in the current political context and after the presidential vacancy.

Fuerza Popular defended the legality of remaining in the Congress Board citing historical precedents, such as Valentín Paniagua in 2000, who moved from Congress president to head of state.

The confidence debate is expected to be a key moment to evaluate government stability and the ability to coordinate between the Executive and Congress.

José Jerí’s cabinet will present its main proposals, including economic, social, and administrative measures, aiming to generate consensus among legislators and secure a solid start to their administration.

Additionally, members of Congress will have the opportunity to raise questions, request clarifications, and publicly consider the cabinet’s objectives.

Wednesday’s plenary session represents an institutional milestone, as it embodies an exercise of democratic oversight and transparency in the relationship between the Executive and Legislative powers in Peru

The vote’s outcome will determine the cabinet’s continuity and set a precedent for political cooperation in Parliament, at a time when governance and institutional stability are essential to face the country’s social and economic challenges.
