José Jerí appoints Ernesto Álvarez Miranda as Peru’s new Prime Minister amid political turmoil

Peruvian President José Jerí has appointed Ernesto Álvarez Miranda as the country’s new Prime Minister, less than a week after the ousting of Dina Boluarte. The appointment was formalized during a ceremony at the Government Palace, where other cabinet members were also sworn in.

Álvarez Miranda, a lawyer and former member of the Partido Popular Cristiano (PPC), requested the cancellation of his party membership before taking office. He replaces Eduardo Arana and will head the executive branch until the general elections scheduled for April 2026.

The new Prime Minister takes office in a context of political instability and nationwide protests following Boluarte’s removal. In his first statements, Álvarez Miranda described the demonstrations as “a subversive attempt to destroy democracy and impose a Bolivarian-style constituent assembly.

Álvarez Miranda has a long background in law and academia. He served as a judge and later president of the Constitutional Court between 2007 and 2014, where he supported the ruling that excluded the 1986 El Frontón prison uprising from crimes against humanity — a decision partially overturned in 2017.

He is currently Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of San Martín de Porres. With his appointment, Jerí aims to project stability and institutional order after yet another political upheaval in the Andean nation.
