Mexico ships over 814 tons of food to Cuba in humanitarian mission

The government of Mexico confirmed the arrival in Cuba of two navy vessels carrying more than 814 tons of food and essential supplies as humanitarian aid for the Caribbean island.

Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Ministry reported that the ships docked at the Port of Havana at approximately 8:30 a.m. local time. President Sheinbaum ordered the operation, and the Navy deployed the logistics support vessels Papaloapan and Isla Holbox to transport the cargo.

According to the official statement, the shipment reflects Mexico’s longstanding solidarity with Latin American nations and aims to address urgent needs among the Cuban civilian population. Authorities specified that the cargo includes liquid milk, meat products, sardines, vegetable oil, and personal hygiene items.

The first vessel transported 536 tons of aid, while the second carried roughly 277 additional tons. Both ships departed Sunday from the port of Veracruz on Mexico’s eastern coast and sailed directly to Havana to deliver the supplies to Cuban authorities.

Officials highlighted the country’s commitment to international cooperation, particularly with nations facing economic hardship or emergency conditions.

The Mexican government described Cuba as a “brotherly nation” and underscored the long-standing bilateral relationship built on political and social cooperation.

President Sheinbaum announced that Mexico currently holds more than 1,500 tons of powdered milk and beans ready for shipment. However, she clarified that the current assistance does not include oil.

The government is evaluating how to potentially resume fuel shipments without triggering penalties or tariffs announced by the United States, adding a strategic dimension to the aid effort.

Through this mission, Mexico strengthens its role as a regional actor willing to provide humanitarian support in critical moments and deepens its ties with Cuba through concrete actions designed to ease shortages of essential goods on the island.
