Petro calls for nationwide march to defend Colombia’s sovereignty

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has called for a nationwide mobilization this Wednesday to defend Colombia’s sovereignty, amid rising regional tensions and statements that he says threaten the country’s right to self-determination following recent developments in Venezuela.

In a message posted on social media platform X, Petro announced that the march will take place at 4:00 p.m. in public squares across the country. He confirmed that he will lead the main rally at Plaza de Bolívar in Bogotá, where he plans to address demonstrators.

“I call for a general mobilization of the Colombian people in defense of our sovereignty,” Petro stated, ending his message with the slogan “Free Colombia!”

In addition to the street protests, the president urged citizens to display the national flag on homes, businesses and workplaces as a symbol of democracy, independence and institutional strength in the face of external pressure.

The call comes amid a sensitive regional context following United States actions in Venezuela and the subsequent capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

In that framework, comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, including criticism of the Colombian government and suggestions of possible intervention, triggered strong reactions in Bogotá.

Petro firmly rejected allegations linking him to drug trafficking and stated that he has the support of the Colombian Armed Forces and broad sectors of society.

Government officials said the march aims to send a clear political message of national unity and rejection of any form of foreign interference in Colombia’s internal affairs.
